Meryl Streep’s enduring partnership with sculptor Don Gummer began during one of the most painful moments of her life. In 1978, while grieving the death of her partner John Cazale, Streep struggled to leave the New York loft filled with memories they had shared. Gummer, a friend of her brother, stepped in to help with practical tasks and offered her the use of his apartment while he traveled abroad. Their connection grew gradually through letters and quiet support rather than sudden romance. By the time he returned, their bond had deepened, and just six months after Cazale’s passing, they married in a private ceremony. Over the decades, they built a family of four children and maintained a notably steady marriage, with Gummer remaining largely out of the spotlight while providing the stability that supported Streep’s remarkable career.
