How to Identify Small Glass Tubes With Tiny Ball Bearings
If you find a small glass tube with three tiny steel balls, it’s not random—it’s a precision part from an antique spirit level, often called a bullseye or machinist’s level.
Unlike standard levels that use a bubble, these use a dome-shaped liquid capsule. The steel balls settle at the lowest point, showing level from any angle.
Why steel balls?
They’re easier to read in vibration, act as clear gravity indicators, and improve accuracy through triangulation.
Where they come from:
Old wooden or brass levels, machinist toolkits, or vintage tool shops.
If the tube is sealed, dome-shaped, and set in metal, it likely came from a leveling instrument.
