No President Ever Tried This. Trump Just Did — On Live Camera

A free press cannot treat threats from those in power as empty drama, especially when they are stated publicly and with clear intent. The first responsibility is clarity: report exactly what was said, provide historical context, and identify it plainly as a challenge to constitutional protections rather than reducing it to accusations of “media bias.” Avoiding or softening the language only risks normalizing the threat.

Solidarity is equally important. News organizations, even competitors, should stand together when any outlet is targeted, rather than supporting punishment of rivals. Legal groups, press unions, and watchdog organizations should also prepare for potential legal or regulatory pressure before it happens. Above all, journalists must continue focusing on verification, transparency, and courage. When power challenges the press, the strongest response is persistent, careful reporting done openly and collectively.
