Phoebe Cates became widely known to American audiences for her role as Kate Beringer in the classic film Gremlins and for appearing in popular teen movies such as Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Drop Dead Fred. Born in New York City on July 16, 1963, she appeared in 16 films across about a decade before stepping away from Hollywood in the mid-1990s. Coming from an entertainment family—her uncle Joseph Katz was a Broadway producer and her grandfather was a Chinese-Filipino from Shanghai—Cates chose to leave acting largely to focus on family life and later opened the Blue Tree boutique in New York, remaining admired by fans who still remember her as one of the most recognizable faces of 1980s cinema.
