Asthma can be fatal: Remembering Ryan Gibbons
Asthma attacks can turn life-threatening in moments—a reality tragically illustrated by 12-year-old Ryan Gibbons, an energetic boy who died in 2012 after suffering an attack at school in Ontario. During a soccer game, Ryan was unable to access his inhaler because school policy required it to be locked in the office, despite repeated pleas from his mother and a doctor’s note allowing him to carry it. Friends tried to help him reach the medication, but he lost consciousness and could not be revived. Determined that no other family should endure the same loss, his mother, Sandra Gibbons, launched a campaign that led to the passage of “Ryan’s Law” (Bill 135), requiring schools to allow students with proper medical authorization to keep inhalers with them. The tragedy sparked wider awareness about asthma safety in schools and underscored a critical lesson: timely access to life-saving medication can mean the difference between life and death.
