He Was Only 13 — And He Swam to Save His Family
A beach outing near Dunsborough turned into an eight-hour survival ordeal after rough seas swept a mother and her two children far from shore. Stranded in open water and clinging to paddleboards, the family fought exhaustion as currents pulled them farther out.
Their rescue depended on 13-year-old Austin Applebee, who swam nearly four kilometres through heavy surf to reach help. Without safety gear or support, he pushed through the rough water until rescuers spotted him and traced his route back to his family.
All three were brought to safety. Officials credited Austin’s determination with saving their lives, calling his swim an extraordinary act of courage under extreme conditions.
