The octopus correctly guessed the outcome of seven of the Germany soccer team\u2019s games<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the 2026 World Cup kicks off in full swing, people are reminiscing on the \u2018viral psychic\u2019 octopus, Paul. But his stardom wasn\u2019t so great, as he began receiving \u2018hate\u2019 from supporters online.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paul became an internet sensation world wide in the summer of 2010, as he correctly predicted the results of Germany<\/a>\u2018s matches during the World Cup<\/a> in South Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, Paul couldn\u2019t talk, but he\u2019d have two boxes of food placed in front of him, one with a German flag, and one with their opponents. Weirdly, he\u2019d always gravitate the team who would later go on to win the match.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Germans had a great run during the cup \u2013 but things went downhill for Paul (and the soccer team) when he started receiving death threats after he predicted that Germany would be beaten in the semi-finals by Spain<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In true Paul fashion, he was right once again, and Germany was left heartbroken when their World Cup dreams came to an end. Of course, Spain then went on to win the whole tournament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Germany soccer fans were looking for anyone to blame \u2013 believing it was poor Paul\u2019s fault.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many of them then threatened to turn him into fish dishes including calamari or paella, as per BBC Sport<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, he was a hero to Spain fans, as the country took home their first title after beating the Netherlands<\/a>, which he predicted once again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unfortunately, we can\u2019t use Paul for his \u2018psychic\u2019 powers this World Cup, as he sadly died just months later, in October 2010.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Staff at the Sea Life centre in Oberhausen said at the time that they were \u2018devastated\u2019 he had passed away at two and a half years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sad news came just months after a spokesperson from the aquarium said he was \u2018not for sale\u2019 and that he would be \u201cstepping back from the official oracle business\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his final months, Paul went back to his regular job, which was \u201cmaking children laugh\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite not having a psychic octopus for the 2026 World Cup \u2013 German mathematician Joachim Klement who has successfully predicted the last three winners of the World Cup has made his predictions once again<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unfortunately, he doesn\u2019t believe the Germany soccer team will take home the title this year either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, he does believe 2010 finalists the Netherlands will be the winners for the first time ever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
