Born in London in 1874, she lived a normal early life, trained as a nurse, and was once known for her beauty and gentle nature. She married, had four children, and enjoyed a happy family life.
Everything changed when she developed acromegaly, a rare condition caused by excess growth hormone that gradually altered her appearance. With no effective medical treatments at the time and limited understanding of the disease, Mary Ann faced growing hardship—especially after becoming a widow. To support her children, she made the heartbreaking decision to enter freak shows, where she was cruelly labeled “the ugliest woman in the world.”
