Flesh-eating bacteria found in popular U.S. tourist spot, carrying 20% risk of death within 48 hours

Scientists have detected dangerous flesh-eating bacteria in waters near a popular Long Island tourist area and issued a warning.

Researchers from Stony Brook University found Vibrio vulnificus—a fast-acting bacterium that can turn deadly within 48 hours—in multiple locations.

Professor Christopher Gobler said it poses a serious risk, especially through open wounds, with about a 20% fatality rate. Dogs have also been affected after drinking contaminated water.

The threat isn’t new—three deaths were linked to the bacteria in 2023—but experts say it’s spreading to more areas due to pollution, algae blooms, and climate change.
